In the 1990s the Society of Automotive Engineers launched a series of annual contests to make automotive design more accessible to engineering students. Students at the VRI rose to the occasion and participated with many innovative designs.
These efforts are well chronicled in Eileen Seal's book, "History of the VRI," chronicling the history of the VRI.
